Dense Fog Triggers Multi-Vehicle Collision on Lucknow–Varanasi Highway, Leaving Two Dead and 16 Injured

Two people were killed and 16 injured after dense fog caused a major multi-vehicle collision on the Lucknow–Varanasi highway in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The crash involved three trucks, a bus, and a car, prompting a police investigation and renewed safety warnings.

A severe road accident unfolded early on the Lucknow–Varanasi national highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district when thick fog sharply reduced visibility, setting off a chain collision involving multiple heavy and passenger vehicles. The crash, which occurred in the Musafirkhana area, resulted in the deaths of two people and left at least 16 others injured, according to local authorities.

Police said the incident began when a truck lost control amid near-zero visibility and mounted the road divider. The impact triggered a domino effect, with two additional trucks, a passenger bus, and a car crashing into one another within moments. The sudden pile-up caused chaos on the busy highway, bringing traffic to a standstill and prompting an emergency response.

Rescue teams and local residents rushed to assist victims trapped in the damaged vehicles as police and medical personnel arrived at the scene. Sixteen injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials confirmed that two of the injured were in critical condition and were referred to a trauma center for advanced medical care, while the remaining 14 are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The Musafirkhana police station has registered the incident and initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and assess whether safety protocols were followed. Authorities have also urged drivers to exercise extreme caution during winter mornings, when dense fog frequently blankets highways across the region.

The accident underscores the recurring dangers posed by poor visibility on major roads during the winter season in northern India. As traffic volumes continue to rise on key transport corridors like the Lucknow–Varanasi highway, officials stress the need for heightened alertness, reduced speeds, and stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
